Korea Institute for Development Strategy(KDS) embarked on “KOSTAT Project 2016: Strengthening the Capacity of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Ecuador” from this July under the auspices of the Statistics Korea (KOSTAT). KDS hosted “Kick-off Meeting” at Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and conducted ‘1st Field Study and Local Consulting’ for two weeks in August.

 

The purpose of the project is to strengthen the statistical capacity of Ecuadorian officials in INEC (National Institute of Statistics and Censuses) by sharing the advanced skills of using national statistics in Korea. This also expects to see successful establishment of socio-economic development plan in Ecuador though introduction of fast and exact national statistical production system and stronger partnership between Korea and Ecuador in the long term.

 

‘The Kick-off Meeting’ was celebrated with presence of José Rosero, the Executive Director of INEC, Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) representatives, experts of statistics from KDS. From each group meeting with officials from all the related departments, including registration census department, the current situation of statistical system of Ecuador, and their needs as well as the demands were closely analyzed.

Based on the information collected from the thorough investigation, additional consulting sessions were delivered to provide some answers to the questions raised by Ecuadorian statistical officials by giving examples of the Korea’s statistical development experiences, and to expand their statistical knowledge in order to effectively meet their expectations.

‘The Invitational Training in Korea’ and ‘2ndLocal Consulting and Training’ for the officials in INEC will be held in the next 2 months and ultimately the project will be successfully completed by opening ‘Project Completion Ceremony’ in November, where the outcomes and achievements of the project will be shared.
