Dr. Seung-hun Chun, the president of KDS, published a new book on economic development and poverty eradication in Korea

Dr. Seung-hun Chun, the president of Korea Institute for Development Strategy (KDS), came out with a book entitled “The Economic Development of South Korea: From Poverty to a Modern Industrial State”. Published by Routledge for worldwide distribution, the book provides the chronicles of Korea’s development and the vivid story of Korea’s endeavors that catapulted one of the poorest countries in the world to a modern industrial state. On his book, Dr. Chun said that his motivation for writing is to share the story of tears and sweat Korean people shed for development with people suffering from poverty in the world as well as young people in Korea who have never gone through the period of poverty and war.

The book launching ceremony was held on April 26, 2018 from 18:00 to 20:30 in Novotel Ambassador Gangnam, Seoul. Around 100 people, including His Excellency Mr. Carlos Victor Boungou (Ambassador of the Gabonese Republic to the Republic of Korea), former policy-makers involved in Korea’s economic development, development cooperation experts, and scholars joined the ceremony and congratulated Dr. Chun on his new book.

“Valuable and well-timed because this book is published at a particularly important moment with the narrative of “Africa Rising”, supported by the high growth rates many African countries are enjoying, with the aspiration to transform that continent into engine for the future economic prosperity of the world”, said Mr. Carlos Victor Boungou in his congratulatory address. “It is important to systematically spread Korea’s development success to the international community. This important and difficult job has been done by Dr. Chun”, said former CEO of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA). Also, Yun-shik Hong, former Minister of Interior said, “The success as well as trials and errors that Korea experienced during its development have drawn interests from the international community because they present practical knowledge developing countries can apply, and this book is special because it provides accurate answers to the questions of the world and developing countries”. Lastly, Barry Clarke, Managing Director of Taylor & Francis Asia Pacific, said in his address, “the story of how South Korea became one of the most dynamic economies in the world is both fascinating and important because it emerged from the Korean War, a history of exploitation by foreign powers, poor infrastructure, and a fractured society”.

“Korea’s development in an unprecedented success in the world and workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and the government came as one to create a magnificent drama”, said Dr. Chun. “I would want nothing more if my small work can instill a sense of confidence in people suffering from poverty in the world and help our young generation understand the value of sweat and tear their parent’s generation shed.”

With the publication of the new book, KDS and Dr. Seung-hun Chun renewed the commitment to making efforts to accelerate the proliferation of Korea’s development experience across the globe as a valuable model of development that may present an alternative to the existing development paradigm.

The book is now available on online stores of Amazon and Routledge.
