(Yangon & Nay Phi Taw, Myanmar) In the midth of July, Korea Institute for Development Strategy(KDS) dispatched a KDS team composed of Mr. Geonjin Moon (Executive Director, Development Consulting Group) and Ms. Seul-A Yi (Programme Officer, Green Development Team) for a field survey to Yangon and Nay Phi Taw, Myanmar, from July 15nd to 21th.. This field trip is for the project entitled “Pre-planning for Construction of Myanmar Automotive Manufacturing and Remanufacturing Parts Technical Center”(hereinafter referred to as “the Project”) under the supervision by Korea Institute of Advancement Technology(KIAT), has been implemented by a consortium with Jeonbuk Institute of Automotive convergence Technology(JIAT), Vision College of Jeonju, and Jeonbuk Root Industrial Association(JROOT). KDS is in charge of successful performance management and economic analysis of the project.

 

In recent years, Myanmar expects to put a step forward to be one of the countries which can develop automobile industry. Myanmar’s secondhand cars comprise a large proportion of the current country’s automobile market and there are only few of newly manufactured cars in the country in spite of Myanmar government’s restriction of used car import. With this in regard, this pre-planning level of project has been proposed as one of the Industry Commerce Cooperation Development Supporting Business(ODA) by KIAT. Furthermore, it provides chances to figure out Myanmar’s current situation in automobile industry, especially regarding its trend, policy, technology, equipments, education, so this field survey has been conducted as the very first step in order to maximize effectiveness of the project.

 

The project team dispatched this time, visited many different types of stakeholders in Nay Phi Taw and Yangon, and discussed by sharing their situation in the Car industry and asked for their proactive participation regarding a Needs Assessment for the project. Those stakeholders included U.M.F.C.C.I., organizations related to car manufacturing. The team also visited a market for automobile parts(second hands) and the potential site for the technical center. It is all for an automobile manufacturing industry to grow up by firming its ground. In particular, KDS is taking part in performance management for the project through a stakeholder analysis economic analysis.

 

**Through this field trip to Myanmar, the consortium including KDS looks forward to designing a proper and effective ODA project for the country, and expects the Automotive Manufacturing and Remanufacturing parts Technical Center to be as a new driving force to Myanmar’s economic development in the future.
