Korea Institute for Development Strategy(KDS) conducts ‘Strengthening the Statistical Capacity of the Department of Census and Statistics of Sri Lanka’ in collaboration with DCS Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Statistics Korea(KOSTAT). This KOSTAT Project’s duration is 3 year, and KDS takes in charge of management and implementation for its 2nd year. The Project contents include 2 education trainings on SNA and Sampling in Sri Lanka, and 4 education trainings in Korea, as well as providing equipment for two computer lecture classrooms and advanced Statistical software to DCS. This Project has designed to enhance the cooperation between Korea and Sri Lanka, and strengthen sustainable statistical capacity for Sri Lankan Governmental officials of DCS and establish of IT infrastructure in Sri Lanka for an advanced national statistical system.


Among the education programs, KDS successfully conducted ‘1st Working-Level Training on SNA in Korea’ in Statistical Training Institute(STI) in Daejeon from 9th to 15th of August with invitation of 15 staff on national accounts from DCS, and ‘2nd Working-Level Training on Sampling in Korea’ from 16th to 21th of August with invitation of 10 working-level staff for sampling design. For the duration of each program on SNA and Sampling, major theories, concepts, and Korean cases were introduced, followed by practices of statistical softwares and efficient techniques with Sri Lankan Statistical data. Trainees and lecturers had lively discussion on the situation of Sri Lanka and advanced Korean case of Statistics. The trainees’ level of satisfaction in lectures and program operation was high. The trainees also visited and learned more about Statistical Korea(KOSTAT) during their program period.


Now, the training for Statistical Instructor is currently held for the three-week period from 7th to 25th of September, and the High-Level Training for DCS officials will be conducted in November, 2015.
