Korea Institute for Development Strategy (KDS), with the consortium partner TACTEEN Naeil is implementing ‘the Project on Prevention and Elimination of Violence against Women for Mainstreaming Gender into the National Development Agenda in Lao PDR’ as the Project Management Consultancy(PMC). As part of this project, a workshop was held on June 29 for 315 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of Laos in the conference room of the National University of Laos in order to promote the volunteer training course planned in August.

At the workshop, the Center for Gender Equality and Elimination of Violence Against Women(GEVAW Center) was introduced, and the volunteer training process was promoted. The PMC is preparing to develop and operate a volunteer training course to increase the effectiveness and continuity of the project. Also, the students were encouraged to be concerned in and practice gender-based violence prevention through education on the technology-mediated gender-based violence prevention.

In August, 35 university students who applied for volunteer work will be selected and trained. The training will be conducted over 5 days (30 hours), and consists of volunteer ethics, gender sensitivity training, understanding of violence against women, and prevention education with the understanding of the awareness-raising campaign. Volunteers who have completed the training course will participate in awareness-raising campaigns, trainings, and PR activities conducted by the GEVAW center.

This Project is funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to establish the GEVAW Center, a central hub for preventing and responding to violence against women, in Vientiane, Laos. The consortium plans to strengthen counselor capacity, support the guidelines development, and implement public relations activities for improving awareness of violence against women as well.
