The Korea Institute for Development Strategy (KDS), in collaboration with Tacteen Naeil, commemorated the establishment of the National Center for Gender Equality and Elimination of Violence Against Women (GEVAW Center) in Vientiane, Laos from February 28th to 29th with an international workshop as a part of the KOICA Project “Project on Prevention and Elimination of Violence against Women for Mainstreaming Gender into the National Development Agenda in Lao PDR(P-EVAW 2020-2024)”.

 

The two-day workshop, held on February 28th and 29th, saw the participation of approximately 100 individuals including representatives from KOICA, the Lao Women's Union (LWU), international organizations, and civil society. On the first day, presentations were made on the current status of violence against women in Laos and the role of the GEVAW Center. On the second day, coinciding with International Women's Day, discussions were held on the economic empowerment of women victims of violence and support systems, focusing on case studies from Laos and neighboring countries such as Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Notably, the second-day workshop conducted online saw the participation of local officials from Laos, who engaged in discussions on various case studies.

 

As the Project Management consultancy (PMC) for this project, KDS aims to contribute to the enhancement of prevention and response capacities for violence against women in Laos by participating in activities centered around the GEVAW Center, including capacity building for VAW responders. awareness-raising campaigns, and management of statistics related to VAW.
